“In The Blackhouse, MacNeil's bar on the corner of Cromwell Street and Francis Street was the scene of a fight between Fin and Murdo Ruadh, the brother of the murder victim, who had made Fin's childhood a misery. The fight spills out of the bar on to the street, which are known as The Narrows.”
There are no cemeteries on the east coast of the Isle of Harris, it’s rocky. So when families needed to bury their dead, bearers would carry the coffin 8 miles across the island, to burial grounds on the west coast. This is the start of the Road. Peter May’s book is intriguing and exciting.
One off the bucket list! A visit to Wigtown, including a quick visit the bookshop made famous by Shaun Bythell’s very funny books.
Book group discussion tonight, with most having enjoyed this. I absolutely loved it, was totally absorbed. The writing is immersive and rich, plus I really cared about Agnes. Great read.
Poverty is a life sentence for many: no wonder it brings with it poor mental and physical health, addiction, hopelessness. This book captures the effects of being poor, interwoven with a beautiful portrait of a child’s devotion to his Mum.
